Whenever possible I use Atomic Filament as a provider for my FDM printers. I have tried a ton of different brands, but their filament diameter is the most consistent I have found. Almost all of the vendors do stick to the industry standard ±0.02mm diameter, but a lot of them have frequent fluctuations or sharp changes. Because the filament is only 1.75mm that diameter range gives a 4.5% area change from the max and min diameter. This translates to up to a 4.5% volume fluctuation in the extrusion. Sharp changes in diameter tend to leave obvious blobs and frequent fluctuation gives an inconsistent layer width. A filament that adheres closely to the nominal diameter and that fluctuates slowly inside of the tolerance provides the best print results. On sale, their filaments are not that much more expensive and the slight premium is worth it for consistency.
