CadQuery is an open source project based around OCCT that allows parametric models to be fully defined in Python code.
Over the past decade I have been on a personal kick to revision everything in GIT. CadQuery allows me to define CAD models entirely in python code. This means any model and all changes could have a history supported by GIT. I personally like this because it means that changes can be signed by the creator using GPG keys meaning that all changes can be accurately and securely attributed to the creator. It also means every change has a canonical reference point so if I every need to undo a change I can simply revert to a previous commit. This also allows notes and documentation to be kept right alongside each change. Most CAD packages have some way to revert changes, but most don't have a way to keep all changes even if they are not kept for a final model.
Overall this method is superior and because it is open source it could be adopted by other tools, but they do not because of other architectural overhead. The desire to keep file types closed, compressed, and opaque are what is preventing wide adoption of this superior technology.
