IDL (pronounced Ideal) Industries, was my primary employer since leaving college. They are a machine shop that manufactures products for the automotive and firearms industries. Their capabilities include swiss style machining, 3 and 4 axis vertical machining, 2 axis lathes, and mill turning.

IDL Industries has been an interesting place to work. I started on the floor as an operator because I was interested in learning about machining. The company decided to invest in some robots and so I was given the opportunity to pivot to something that was more in line with what I had studied. I spent nearly 5 years maintaining the robots and setting up new jobs, but in my free time I am tasked with tool management, wiki maintenance, internal web app development, and general maintenance tasks that are beyond the scope of what our machinists handled.

I really enjoyed the broad range of tasks and the freedom to decide what to work on day to day based on what was on my plate. Being a small company and in only a few industries they had some cyclical crunches, but when things were light that gave us time to adapt and implement new processes.
