Ornithoid Mechanism

About

This project started out as a mother's day project. It is a desk ornament designed to resemble a bird flapping its wings.

Versions

V1

This version was the initial design. It was made to be quick and simple. All of the joints and bearings are press fit.

The successes in this design:

  • it works
  • the motion is smooth and mesmerizing (the gif doesn't do it justice)
  • the marbled effect of the 3d print is very noticeable in person

The problems evident in this design:

  • the case is practical but not aesthetically pleasing/not very bird like
  • the motor is too loud
  • the press together joints are too likely to pop out of place when handled

V2

This design is under development. It exists to fix the issues with the initial design. I also wanted to add a charging circuit and battery so that it can be run without being plugged in. The total resistance in the system is low since the prints are very light and all of the joints have bearings. This makes battery operation even with a fairly small cell possible.
