Pneumatic Vise

About

This is a project for IDL Industries intended to create a pneumatic vise for their in house work holding applications. This design was created based on the vises we are using in the shop taking into consideration what we don't like about them.

Design Decisions

The vise:

  • is for light duty applications
  • should be primarily made of aluminum for ease of manufacture
  • wear parts should be made of steel
  • should have reversible jaws
  • should have standardized replaceable jaws
  • should have optional jaw position sensing to allow for integration with robotics
  • should be self-centering
  • should use as many off the shelf parts as possible
  • should have a 100 thou stroke

Implications:

  • the vise body and jaws are designed to be made out of 7075 aluminum
  • the yoke and pins that actuate the jaws are made of 304 Stainless Steel
  • the pins, bolts, and o-rings are standard McMaster-Carr parts
